Myth: Cats developed meowing to communicate with their humans.
Fact: Cats meow from when they’re kittens, and mum’s size in relation to them is about the same as a grown cat’s size to a smaller human. Cats also meow at each other quite often.
Ergo: They feel like we’re the Big Cats and when normal cat communication with us doesn’t work so well they go back to meowing and eventually they learn that they can sort of communicate with us by using particular meows in particular situations.
Also a lot of cat communication is location/situation dependent. Ours bois run around when they’re feeling happy and drum their feet hard on the ground as they do to make a lot of noise, it’s one way of letting the rest of us know. They also stomp their feet when they’re grumpy – it’s one of a limited number of ways they have available to them to express themselves. And if running down a rival, they drum their feet to terrify the other.
Meowing is just one of the ways they communicate with others – more with us though because we’re not aware of the world the way they are. They pick up on an ear flick among themselves, a sudden stilling of a tail, claws extending, sounds from one another we can’t quite hear as they’re a smidgen above our hearing range. And when they don’t get a proper catlike reaction from us, they resort to baby talking to us.
