Why Is There Still A Card Transaction Charge?

You ever start to wonder about something and then all of a sudden you get the feeling there’s something not quite right with it?

That was me with looking at card transaction charges… Banks would prefer that we don’t use cash because then they can cut down even more on staff or even close more branches. Fair enough in a twisted greedy shysterish way.

But is it?

The money bunny rabbit hole

For a start – for organisations whose raison d’etre is money, banks have a funny way of showing it. They would be happiest if all your money and mine and everyone else’s was just digital data. Because then there’s be no need to have ANY branch offices, it could all be handled by a call centre and 90% of queries by a chatbot.

Governments would like to see an end to cash because they would no longer have to print any and could close the Mint except as a museum piece. Then, the Government also reasons, there would be fewer untraceable cash transactions greasing the wheels of criminal activity, and the Police could stop chasing criminals and get back to their primary purpose of beating the general populace into submission with rubber truncheons and in general breaking the spirits of the ordinary person on the street.

If you need proof that you’re one cash cow in a herd of millions, look at that push to kill cash while holding one more piece of information in your mind: There being no cash, how can transaction fees on card transactions still be allowed?

If the only way to buy things is with a card, then placing a charge on it constitutes fraud, extortion, and thievery. If the Government plans to do away with money without doing away with those fees, they too are guilty by omission, of facilitating, aiding, and abetting that fraud, extortion, and thievery. It follows, right?

So those are powerful reasons to not relinquish our right to fiat currency in cash, but there’s an even more powerful one.

Note all the times that communications outages and natural disasters have rendered EFTPOS terminals and ATMs unuseable. Chaos, amirite? You need cash at those times. The only thing cash denies the Government is our traceability and their ability to shut our entire lives down by pulling one plug.
