The Internet’s First Search Engine

Anyone remember Ask Jeeves? Altavista? Excite? Lycos? WebCrawler? Infoseek? Yep – all search engines designed to help people find information on the web, but did you know they all have a granddaddy?

Meet the guys that brought back Archie. Archie was the go-to place to search – for files to download. Not so much web pages, but files which were available by the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) on various file archives around the Internet. (Or even Gopher.)

And now there’s an Archie server online again thanks to – well, I’ll let these guys finish the story:
